About the Opportunity. The Human Language Analysis Beings (HLAB) is currently recruiting PhD students to join our interdisciplinary research group under the advisement of H. Andrew Schwartz and Oscar Kjell. We are seeking applicants with strong backgrounds in both psychology and natural language processing.

Part-time Research Assistant role collaborating on AI + human interfaces that support evidence-based psychotherapies.

Research Assistant (Part-Time) — AI User Experience

About the role. HLAB is seeking a motivated and skilled part-time Research Assistant (RA) from Data Science, Computer Science, or HCI to help integrate and experiment with AI + human interfaces for large language models that support evidence-based psychotherapies. Work includes prototyping and iterating on web UIs, running lightweight UX research, and adding instrumentation for evaluation using READI criteria (safety, privacy, equity, engagement, effectiveness, implementation).

What you’ll do

  • Create mock-ups and prototype or iterate on web UIs
  • Participate in technical team meetings
  • Implement interface components and LLM calls
  • Run experiments and usability checks
  • Write clear, reproducible documentation

Preferred skills

  • Python; React and TypeScript (or similar); HTML, CSS, and JavaScript; Git
  • Task flows, usability evaluation, statistical inference
  • Nice to have: exposure to user-research methods

Mentorship & impact. Work with an interdisciplinary team spanning Vanderbilt and Stanford, with opportunities to co-author tools and research papers.
